Allergic Reaction

Thursday, May 8th, Kinsey woke up with a rash all over her body and a fever of 101.8. I took her to an urgent care clinic and they said she had scarletina. They prescribed cephalexin (knowing she is allergic to amoxicillin). We came home and the rash became worse. After taking Benadryl she fell asleep. I woke her after about four hours. She had 104.5 fever. She was hallucinating and so swollen. Jake was at work so my parents and I took her to the ER. They said she was having an allergic reaction to the prescription she received that morning. They weren't sure if she had scarlet fever or an allergic reaction to a sulfa drug she took over a week ago for a kidney infection. In the ER she had every test imaginable done, took her first pill, and had blood drawn for the first time. After six hours in the ER we were sent home still unsure what caused the rash. The swelling went down, but the rash was still bad and itched terribly. It covered every inch of her body...from her scalp to the tips of her toes. It was even on her fingers and the bottom of her feet. They prescribed a steroid to help with the rash. Every time she took it her face would swell and turn bright red (another bad reaction to a medicine). It was a rough few days! They said it could take up to two weeks for the rash to go away. You can still see light red spots and it itches when she gets hot. She has to stay out of direct sunlight until it completely clears up. Sadly that meant missing Field Day at school. I guess you never know what your child is allergic to until they try it. So far she is allergic to anything in the penicillin category, all sulfa drugs, and the steroid prednisolone.
